I finally got around to se Bill Cunningham New York. A very insightful documentary about one of the most influential street style photographers (you can see videos of his his page in the New York Times here). The whole thing was really inspiring, I just loved his view on fashion and how he doesn't consider himself a professional photographer but a mere recorder of what's happening on the streets. At some point he says something that really stayed with me, "fashion is the armor to survive everyday life".

By the end of the documentary you feel like you know this charming man and his love for what he does. I was smiling through the film, it's just lovely.

Recuerdo que cuando era niña mi mamá me vestía con t-shirts de personajes de Disney y pantalonetas de lycra en los colores menos afortunados. Está de más decir que mi relación con la ropa no era de las mejores; es realmente un misterio cómo llegué a terminar en la industria de la moda.

Por eso ahora me encanta ver ropa de niños con diseño. Ropa que yo misma me podría poner si la tuvieran en mi talla.

Hace un par de semanas EPK, una marca internacional dedicada a moda infantil, me mandó algunas fotos de su nueva colección y me enamoré de algunas piezas. Este es mi pick de lo mejor de su colección:

LIF Week: Ana Maria Guiulfo [Part 2]

No sé si será el resfrío, el cansancio o el stress del trabajo pero no he estado con ganas de hablar de moda esta semana. Mucho menos de escribir. Qué peor momento no? Justo después del fashion week. En todo caso mis disculpas por la demora.

A pesar de mi mal humor, no quiero dejar de comentar la colección de Ana Maria Guiulfo, que fue la que más me gustó de todo lo presentado (incluyendo a Custo Dalmau - sé que se van a alocar, pero es cierto).

Esta colección, llamada New Mood, fue la continuación/evolución perfecta a la presentada en Punta del Este. "New Mood" se inspira en las grandes divas como Greta Garbo y Rita Hayworth; y en la sofisticación de los años 40's. Inspiración vintage que se reinventa en un look muy actual.

La combinación de materiales y texturas (cueros, pieles, sedas, etc) y el contraste de colores neutros (marrón, beige, negro) con colores vibrantes (verde, azul, naranja) realmente me cautivó. Cuando veo esta colección me imagino a una mujer sofisticada, chic e independiente. Definitivamente, outfits que me encantaría usar.

De lejos mi pasarela favorita. Ya me conocen, denme prendas audaces, cortes impecables y jazz como música de fondo y seré feliz.

HEART SCAPE by Mozhdeh Matin

Mozhdeh Matin is a peruvian designer that is not conventional at all. For that reason, it was no surprise for me when she decided to present her collection without a runway or models.

Motion pictures that seemed out of an Akira Kurosawa film, but that were in fact an original video shot by Mitsuo Maruyama with Sena Cho as actress/model. Live music that completed those images; violin, harp and beatbox included. Installation art by Anisa Matin that was an extension of the video's concept and that displayed the garments with certain mistery. A collection that showed the consistent progression of a talented designer. That was Heart Scape.

Mozhdeh Matin es una diseñadora peruana que no tiene nada de convencional. Por eso no me sorprende que haya presentado su colección sin desfile ni modelos.

Imágenes que parecían sacadas de una película de Akira Kurosawa pero que eran un video original por Mitsuo Maruyama con actuación/modelaje de Sena Cho. Música en vivo que complementaba las imágenes con violín, arpa y beatbox incluído. Una instalación por Anisa Matin que continuaba el ambiente del video y a la vez exponía las prendas con cierto misterio. Una colección que muestra la progresión coherente de una talentosa diseñadora. Eso fue Heart Scape.

Disney girl, singer/actress/dancer Andrea Guasch visited Peru, where she was invited to sing as part of the Amber Fest. Whenever I hear Disney I think of pink dresses, hearts and bows, but this lovely spanish girl proves me wrong with her punk/rock/trash style. I fell in love with those chunky boots.

Chica Disney, cantante/actriz/bailarina Andrea Guasch visitó Perú, donde fue la invitada especial del Amber Fest. Cuando escucho Disney me vienen a la mente vestiditos rosa, corazones y lazos, pero esta española me hizo cambiar de idea con su estilo punk/rock/trash. Me enamoré de esos botines.

Natsumi, the levitating photographer

Natsumi Hayashi levitates through life. Or at least she seems to, in her series of levitating self-portraits.

“I wanted to express myself in the picture as someone free from Earth’s gravitational pull,” Natsumi says. “In being free of gravity in the pictures, I am also not bound to societal conventions. I feel as though I am not tied to many things and able to be my true self.”

Natsumi photographs herself in different parts of Tokyo, levitating through different activities. The pictures are not only very natural looking, but they are also very beautiful. The places, poses, colors and compositions are beautiful, her personal style is very cute, very japanese . You can see more of her series on her blog.

First time posting about a church

I'm agnostic and I don't really take great interest in churches. But I was reading Etiqueta Negra and this one captured my attention. Ica (Peru) was virtually destroyed by an earthquake in 2007 and the Basilica ended up in pieces. This is clever proposal by 51-1 Arquitectos keeps the original shape but it would consist of a concrete and steel framework. The space between the structures would be covered by polycarbonate (which is resistant to earthquakes) with a skin made of plants (bougainvilleas and vines). This is a church that I would actually enjoy visiting (at least once) I can't get over the idea of being surrounded by plants with mystical lighting, and they even say that the watering of these plants could make pretty rainbows on the sky! I really hope they build it.

Soy agnóstica y la verdad que no le presto mucha atención a las iglesias. Pero hoy me tocó almorzar sola y mientras leía Etiqueta Negra vi una iglesia que me capturó. Ica (Perú) fue prácticamente destruida por un terremoto en el 2007 y la Basílica quedó hecha pedazos. Mi país es mayoritariamente católico (hasta yo tuve que estudiar en un colegio de monjas) y las iglesias forman parte importante de la organización de sus ciudades, así que este tipo de pérdidas afectan mucho al espíritu de la población.

51-1 Arquitectos presentó una propuesta muy interesante que mantendría la forma original pero que consistiría en un esqueleto de concreto y acero. El espacio entre las estructuras sería cubierto con paneles de policarbonato (que son resistentes a los terremotos) y sobre esto una piel vegetal de buganvillas y vid. Esta es una iglesia que sí disfrutaría visitar (por lo menos una vez), me encanta la idea de estar totalmente rodeada de plantas con una iluminación mística, hasta dicen que producto del riego de estas plantas se formarían constantes arcoiris! Realmente espero que se construya.

I must confess that I hadn't taken a special interest on Ana Maria Guiulfo design's before, but when they sent me the pictures of the last collection presented at Punta del Este, I found myself very attracted to them. I was surprised, to say the least. I loved the 50's housewife + Blade Runner combo. So very chic.

Debo confesar que no había tomado un interés especial en los diseños de Ana Maria Guiulfo, pero cuando me enviaron las fotos de su última colección, presentada en Punta del Este, me sentí totalmente atraída a ellos. Decir que me sorprendió mucho, es poco. Simplemente amé la fusión ama de casa de los 50's + Blade Runner, combinados de una forma tan chic.

I like it when great designers create more accessible collections for non-luxury brands. So I was happy to hear that David Koma designed a capsule collection for Topshop. He presented stunning bodycon dresses with cool details like the metal cylinders you can see on the pics. Yay for Koma!

I get excited every time I meet a new designer with wonderful ideas. Today I met Marisa Fuentes Prado. I usually like to write more, analyze, critique, etc... but the stunning pictures speak for themselves. I'm also excited to tell you that these beauties will be in my store (TREND STUDIO) next week.

Me emociono cada vez que conozco a un diseñador nuevo con ideas geniales. Hoy día conocí a Marisa Fuentes Prado. Usualmente escribo más, de hecho me gusta describir y opinar por montones, pero creo que estas fotos hablan por sí mismas (adoré la dirección de arte, por la misma Marisa). Apparently, 2010 has been the year of David Bowie's references in fashion. To be honest I hadn't noticed this, because I never really followed the rock star, but a friend of mine sent me the style file where they make the influence obvious. I didn't know he had such an amazing style (pardon my ignorance, I'm not your average rocker girl) but now I feel like watching a lot of his videos. I can see now that he never had the fear to stand out, which is a quality that I admire.

Aparentemente el 2010 ha sido el año de referencias de Bowie en las pasarelas. La verdad es que no lo había notado porque nunca seguí mucho al rockero, pero una amiga me mandó el link del style file donde hacen referencia a su influencia (gracias Malu!) y me pareció divertido compartirlo con ustedes. No sabía que tenía un estilo tan genial (disculpen la ignorancia, no soy muy rockera), creo que voy a comenzar a ver todos sus videos! ahora me doy cuenta de que Bowie nunca tuvo miedo de sobresalir y diferenciarse de la multitud, una cualidad que admiro mucho.

Today I found a video a friend of mine posted on facebook. It's about Pull, Tap, Pop! à la mode. A pop up book about fashion, which is visually stunning and very clever. This is a student project by Ruben Scupin, who defines himself as a 'graphic surgeon'. You can see more of his interesting projects in his website: rubenscupin.com

In days like today, when my head is exploding and I just wanna go to bed, I wish I could be one of those people that work 9 to 5 in an office and can call in sick. But what do I do to cheer myself up? I stare at all the pretty colors and textures that surround me.

I have always been and admirer of big eyes, probably because I'm part asian and I don't have them (we always want what we don't have, right?). Anyway, Ukrainian model Masha Tyelna has the most stunning face ever and beautiful big big eyes.
She's one of the models that stand out no matter what. Her look is very contemporary and alienesque, perfect for high fashion.

Black Swan & Rodarte

Last week I watched Aronofsky's Black Swan and it really impressed me. I was thinking about it today and I thought it would be a good post because of the beautiful costumes.

Black Swan is a psychological journey of an ambitious and perfectionist ballerina trying to get (be?) the role of her life. A journey in which she looses herself in a neurotic attempt to embrace her dark side. Such visceral story needed stunning and artistic costumes. Aronofsky and costume designer Amy Wescott knew that they needed a contemporary fashion designer and made the best decision choosing Rodarte's Laura and Kate Mulleavy for the ballerina outfits.

Rodarte had already taken horror films and ballet as inspiration for their past collections.

2010 was the year of experimentation for me. I did all kind of new things, most of them related to fashion. Opening my store, scouting for new designers, co-creating Colaboratorio, writing, blogging, and finally doing some art direction and styling. I feel very happy about all of these new things that feel more real to me than my old 9 to 6 job.

I wanted to share with you the first project in which I did art direction & styling (other than the pics for my store Trend Studio). I was lucky enough to work with some great people for this. The photographer, Rene Funk, is very talented and creative, you can see more about him here. The model, Nicole Faveron, was so lovely and with such great personality (she was also signed by Ford Models), you can see more about her here. And finally, Rah Mansouri, who does awesome make up and hair, see more here.

I got them yesterday. My oh-so-perfect boots. I wore this design [in black] for Katha Puga's 2011 campaign [see the pics here] and she made these boots specially for me, giving me the exclusivity of this color combination.

I love them so much, I feel like a child in Christmas. This is exactly the statement piece I needed to start my 2011 wardrobe.

I have to apologize for my absence. December has been a crazy month and I have been working my ass on my store. I sold a lot of really fantastic designs so I'm happy I have sent some more beauty to the world. Anyway, tomorrow is New Year's Eve and like everyone I have started to plan my outfit. I usually like to go bold and daring for NYE but this year I'm going to a small, casual party with some friends at their terrace. So what to do? what to wear? Here are my [very different] options.

Debo disculparme por mi ausencia. Diciembre ha sido un mes loco y he estado trabajando sin parar en mi tienda. He vendido muchos diseños fantásticos y me hace feliz saber que he enviado algo más de belleza al mundo. Mañana es Año Nuevo y, como todo el mundo, ya comencé a planear mi outfit. Last Friday the designer Maria Luisa Negri presented her SS2011 collection at my store, Trend Studio. We organized a very cool gathering which included a performance by Adriana Seminario (check her blog here). It was great working with Maria Luisa, I have been an admirer of her designs since I met her. She's one of those rare designers that create their collections around a very deep and conceptual idea and still give you very wearable, beautiful pieces. I also felt very inspired by Adriana's performance, she really captured the essence of the collection in a wonderful way.

El viernes pasado la diseñadora Maria Luisa Negri presentó su colección PV2011 en mi tienda, Trend Studio. Organizamos una reunión muy agradable que incluyó un performance por Adriana Seminario (visiten su blog aquí). Fue genial trabajar con Maria Luisa, he sido gran admiradora de sus diseños desde que la conocí. Ella crea sus colecciones de manera muy conceptual y aun así el producto final son piezas bellas, usables y hechas de manera impecable. También me sentí muy inspirada por el performance de Adriana, que capturó la esencia de la colección de una manera hermosa.

PERCEPCIÓN
Experimentamos sensaciones. Percibimos la realidad a través de estímulos captados por nuestros sentidos que el cerebro se encarga de decodificar. Cada persona percibe los estímulos de forma distinta. Somos observadores que se han definido a si mismos a través de una concatenación de percepciones pasadas que nos hacen ver el objeto, o las distintas situaciones, de una manera subjetiva.
Cómo describir entonces nuestra percepción de la percepción? Tres palabras y sus definiciones nos delatan. Plano, Transparencia y Cuerda.
Plano - Llano,liso./ Posición social de las personas. / Punto de vista. / Superficie imaginaria que ocupan las personas y objetos que forman una imagen. / Sucesión de fotogramas rodados sin interrupción
Transparencia – adj. [Cuerpo] a través del cual pueden verse los objetos con claridad./ Traslúcido. / Que se deja adivinar o vislumbrar sin declararse o manifestarse. / Tela o papel que se coloca delante de ventanas, o ante una lámpara para suavizar o mitigar la luz. / Ventana de cristales que ilumina y adorna el fondo de un altar:
Cuerda - Conjunto de hilos torcidos que forman un solo cuerpo más o menos grueso, largo y flexible. / Ligamentos que están en la laringe, cuyas vibraciones producen la voz.
El capítulo 4 es un tímido intento de reflejar este complejo y amplio tema.
